Puerto Rico is one of the larger islands in the Caribbean. Situated to the east of the Dominican Republic and west of the British Virgin Islands, its territory includes the islands of Vieques, Culebra, Culebrita, Palomino, Mona, Monito and several others. 60% of the land area is covered by the Central Mountain Range, which more or less cuts the island in half and reaches its pinnacle with the 4390ft Cerro de Punta. Puerto Rico is also the locality for the only tropical rainforest in the US National Forest System, El Yunque, which covers 28,000acres and has over 10 billion gallons of rainfall every year. The forest contains around 240 species of trees some of which have been growing for thousands of years.
