Cuba is the largest of the Caribbean Islands and the 15th largest in the world. The most westerly of the Greater Antilles it is situated 90 miles south of Florida and includes the 136sq mile Isla de la Juventud and over 4200 coral cays and islets. A quarter of the country is dominated by three mountain ranges -the Oriental, Central and Occidental the highest point being the 6470ft Pico Turquino.The fertile flatlands are used for grazing cattle and plantation crops such as sugar cane, coffee and, of course, fine Cuban tobacco. Cuba boasts 6000 plus species of plant, about half of which are endemic. It also lays claim to having 20 million palms spread across the country amongst them the rare, prehistoric cork palm that hails back to the Cretaceous Period. Reptiles are abundant ranging from crocodiles to salamanders, iguanas to 15 species of poisonous snake. Cuba is also home to the world’s smallest bird – the bee hummingbird, which weighs only two grams.
